New Yorkers planning to hit the road in mid-April be warned: A roughly 1-mile span of the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway will be closed to Queens-bound traffic on the second weekend of the month so substantial repairs can be done.
The city Department of Transportation said on Friday that the Queens-bound side of the BQE will be fully offline from Atlantic Avenue to Sands Street from April 13 at 2 a.m. to April 15 at 4 a.m. Officials urged travelers to avoid the highway during the closure and expect significant travel delays.
“Just as we did successfully last fall, we continue to deliver critical repairs to the BQE to preserve its lifespan while at the same time trying to minimize impact on the local community,” Transportation Commissioner Ydanis Rodríguez said in a statement. “And this time again we will keep the public closely updated on our progress as we plan ahead for this work.”
The planned repairs are designed to prolong the lifespan of the ailing stretch of highway and involve adding new concrete and reinforcing steel bars near Clark Street and Grace Court. They come after similar work last October and will be followed by more repairs slated for June 1 to 3.
Multiple detours will be in effect along the BQE during the April work. The following ramps will be closed, according to the DOT:
- Third Avenue at 65th Street entrance ramp
- Sixth Avenue at 65th Street entrance ramp
- Prospect Expressway entrance ramp
- Hamilton Avenue entrance ramp
- Atlantic Avenue entrance ramp
- Cadman Plaza exit ramp
- Brooklyn Bridge exit ramp
- Manhattan Bridge exit ramp
