The victim was pronounced dead at the scene near Traveler Street and Frontage Road Tuesday morning.

Authorities released the identity of the man who died Tuesday when a cement truck struck him as he used a wheelchair in South Boston.

Fernando R. Pizarro, 57, was “moving in and around” stopped vehicles using his wheelchair at the intersection of Traveler Street and Frontage Road just before the incident, according to State Police. He was in front of a concrete truck when traffic began to move.

The truck involved was a 2020 Mack Granite cement truck owned by Boston Sand and Gravel, police said. A 53-year-old Medford man was driving it at the time, police said.

State Police troopers responded just after 10 a.m. They found that Pizarro was already dead at the scene.

Authorities did not specify where Pizarro lived. He had previously resided at a homeless shelter in Boston, according to police.

The driver was brought to a local hospital with “possible minor injuries.” Both the driver and representatives from Boston Sand and Gravel have been cooperating with investigators.

“Troopers thus far have found no evidence suggesting impairment or distraction on the driver’s part. Per federal Department of Transportation regulations, the driver was screened for alcohol or drug use,” a state police spokesperson said in a statement.

The truck was towed to a state police facility, where troopers from the Collision Analysis and Reconstruction section and the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement section will examine it. An investigation is ongoing.
