Chattahoochee Recreation Area’s Columns Drive lot closes, Interstate North reopens

The Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area’s Columns Drive parking lot in Sandy Springs will close on Tuesday, April 2, for a paving repair project.

The Interstate North Unit parking lot will reopen on Tuesday, Ann Honious, the superintendent of the park, said in a press release.

The repaving project at Columns Drive will not alter the current size or configuration of the parking lot, she said in the release.

The paving project will require the closing of the Columns Drive entrance. No vehicle access will be available at this entrance during the duration of the project, but pedestrians and bicycles can still enter Columns Drive near the gate, east of the lot.

“We understand this disrupts the regular routine of many, local visitors, and thank you for your patience as we improve our parking lots,” Honious said. “We also encourage park visitors to please visit Cochran Shoals trails by starting your visit at Sope Creek or Interstate North parking lots to avoid congestion.”

Contractors will need to close the Powers Island parking lot for the day on April 8 to install the permanent line striping, she said.

Akers Mill and Powers Island were the first units to be repaved, according to the release. The Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area’s repair and repaving of the entry road and parking lots correct sub-surface and water control issues. The pavement preservation program also includes striping to improve traffic flow and parking visibility as well as replacement of unit signage. The project is funded through the Federal Lands Transportation Program.
