A 2-year-old child has died after a fire ripped through his Washington Heights home and sent him and his two siblings to the hospital last month, police confirmed on Tuesday.
The boy, King Corporan, was hospitalized in critical condition at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center due to the March 20 fire, according to NYPD officials. Firefighters had responded to a call around 11 p.m. that night for a fire at a residential building at 206 Audubon Ave.
Manhattan prosecutors later identified Skilyn Maldonado as the children’s mother and charged her with three counts of endangering a child’s welfare. She described leaving her children, who ranged from ages 1 through 8, alone for 30 minutes, during which time the fire broke out, according to a criminal complaint.
Maldonado pleaded not guilty to those charges last month. Attempts to reach her attorney on Tuesday were not immediately successful.
The complaint said surveillance footage showed a child who appeared to be between 7 and 9 years old stepping out of Maldonado’s apartment and banging on neighbors’ doors as smoke emanated from the home.
The 1-year-old was also critically injured in the fire, officials said.
