🗓️ Today is Indigenous Peoples’ Day, or Columbus Day, “one of the most inconsistently celebrated U.S. holidays,” according to the Pew Research Center. Many government offices, banks, and the USPS are closed, while the stock markets and most retailers remain open.

📉 Georgia tax collections fell by 2.8% last month, resuming a downward pattern that has taken hold for much of this year.

🎓 Atlanta Public Schools achieved an 88.4% graduation rate for 2024, according to the Georgia Department of Education.

🏆 The Council for Quality Growth held its 35^th annual Four Pillar Tribute on Thursday night in honor of Herman J. Russell Sr. and his family members.

🏠 The City of Atlanta will pay the Metro Atlanta Land Bank $1.4 million to prepare foreclosed properties for redevelopment as affordable housing.

🐼 Giant pandas Lun Lun, Yang Yang, Ya Lun, and Xi Lun arrived safely in China on Saturday after a 25-year exchange program with Zoo Atlanta ended this month.

2. Babe Walls mural festival to highlight female, nonbinary artists

🎨 The walls of the Chamblee Rail Trail are about to get a splash of color. 

Babe Walls, a nonprofit arts organization that coordinates mural festivals featuring female and nonbinary artists, is bringing their celebration of public art from Colorado to Chamblee next month.

Artist and Babe Walls Executive Director Alexandrea Pangburn (pictured) recently took the time to chat with Sketchbook curator Isadora Pennington about the festival: why it started, how it evolved, and what you can expect to see during the local debut taking place from Nov. 7-10.

3. Hezbollah strikes Israeli army base; Women’s world record at Chicago Marathon

🇮🇱🇱🇧 A Hezbollah drone strike killed four Israeli soldiers at a central Israel army base this morning. The group said it was in retaliation for recent Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon. The U.S. said it would send troops to Israel to operate a Terminal High Altitude Area Defense system, or THAAD, to help defend against Iranian missile attacks.

🏅 MIT’s Daron Acemoglu and Simon Johnson, and University of Chicago’s James Robinson won the Nobel Prize in Economics for their research on institutional impacts on national prosperity and inequality. It’s the final Nobel Prize to be awarded this year.

🇩🇴 The Dominican Republic is threatening to deport more than 10,000 migrants a week as Haitians flee widespread gang violence. The two countries share the island of Hispaniola.

🇦🇷 A minister of Argentina’s largest county has suggested seceding from the economically depressed nation. Minister Jorge D’Onofrio says an independent Buenos Aires County, home to 40 percent of Argentines, would have the largest GDP in Latin America.

🇮🇳 Ratan Tata, one of India’s wealthiest and most celebrated industrialists, has passed away at age 86. Tata was an avid pilot and animal lover who once ordered that stray dogs be allowed to relax in the company’s lobby.

🇺🇦 The National Ballet of Ukraine is touring the United States for the first time since the collapse of the USSR. The ensemble performs this coming Sunday in Atlanta at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre.

🌐 DNA testing has revealed that 15th-century explorer Christopher Columbus was a Sephardic Jew from Western Europe. Historical tradition has held that Columbus was from Genoa, Italy. 

🇨🇦 Today is Canadian Thanksgiving Day.

🇳🇿 Emirates Team New Zealand took a commanding 3-0 lead in 🇨🇦sailing’s America’s Cup finals after winning Race 3 against INEOS Britannia off the coast of Barcelona, Spain.

🇿🇦 Kenyan marathoner Ruth Chepngetich shattered the women’s marathon world record in yesterday’s Chicago Marathon, clocking an unofficial time of 2:09:56, and shaving nearly two minutes off of the previous record.
