A fire in a Manhattan apartment building killed two elderly residents early Tuesday morning, according to police and fire department officials.

The blaze started at around 1:45 a.m. on the top floor of a six-story building on West 178th Street and Broadway in Washington Heights, officials said.

Deputy Assistant Chief of fire operations Malcolm Moore told reporters at the scene that units encountered “heavy fire venting from three windows on the top floor,” which quickly spread to the area just below the building’s roof and to an apartment below.

Moore said firefighters found a 77-year-old woman and a 74-year-old man unconscious and unresponsive in the apartment where the fire started.

“One was found in the front room, and once the units were able to battle past the heavy fire condition throughout a large portion of the apt, they found a second victim, we believe the male, in the back bedroom,” he said.

The couple were taken to Harlem Hospital in critical condition, and pronounced dead once they arrived, officials said.

Three other residents of the building were treated on scene for minor injuries, as well as one firefighter and two EMS workers, according to the FDNY.

A total of 130 firefighters responded to the incident, and extinguished the fire by 7 a.m.

Police said a vacate order was issued for the building.

The Fire Marshal was investigating the cause of the blaze, and the names of the victims were not immediately released.
