This week at the Farmers Market


Rough Draft Atlanta is partnering with Community Farmers Markets to let you know what’s in season at your local market. Each week, we’ll share a list of ingredients that are farm fresh as well as a couple of recipes including those products that you can try at home. 

Here’s what we’ve got for you this week: Apples, pears, muscadine grapes, cantaloupe, tomatoes, gold and red potatoes, winter squash like spaghetti, butternut, acorn, and dumpling, peppers like bell, shishito, aji dulce, padron, and cubanelle, okra, eggplants, garlic, the last of the summer squashes, herbs like basil, thyme, rosemary, fennel, flower bouquets with dahlia, zinnia, sunflowers, etc, microgreens, gourmet mushrooms like oyster and lion’s mane, eggs, honey, beef, pork, chicken, duck, broths, breads, jams, ferments, fresh juices, pastries and sweet treats including gluten-free options, smoked trout and salmon, raw and flavored pecans, honey, coffee, teas, pickles, cocktail mixers, ghee, cooking oils, vinegars, hot sauce, homemade pasta and sauces, spice blends, pet treats.

Atlanta non-profit Community Farmers Markets (CFM) has been building community through farmers markets since 2011. Operating five weekly outdoor farmers markets and seven farm stands at MARTA stations is one of the strategies by which the organization addresses food access in Atlanta. CFM also offers educational programming in the community, financial incentives to make local food more affordable, and professional development for small businesses. See you at the farmers markets!

Fried Okra Recipe:

Ingredients:

  • 2 lbs of okra sliced thick
  • 2 Eggs
  • 2 tbsp water
  • 2 tsp Haus Seasoning (paprika, onion, garlic, salt, and pepper)
  • Salt and pepper
  • 2 cups Cornmeal
  • Oil

Directions:

  1. Divide your ingredients into three stations.
  2. Station 1: a cutting board with 2 lbs of okra sliced thick. 
  3. Station 2: 2 eggs, 2 tbsp of water, 1 tsp Haus seasoning: whisk all ingredients together.
  4. Station 3: 2 cups cornmeal, 1 tbsp Haus seasoning: mix together.
  5. Go from station 1, to 2, to 3, thoroughly covering your okra in both the wet and dry components. 
  6. Use whatever oil you prefer in a pan. Get it hot, but not too hot. Fry okra on all sides until golden brown (5-ish minutes). 
  7. Line a plate with a paper towel to put your okra on from the fryer and absorb the extra oil. Sprinkle with salt and pepper and enjoy!

3x Apple Salad Recipe:

Ingredients:

  • 1 bag Asian salad mix 
  • 1 small bag mixed Ginger gold and galas 
  • 1 Beetroot Apple Granola 
  • 1 Cashew Milk Kefir 
  • 1 TBSP honey
  • 1 TBSP apple cider vinegar ⁣
  • half a lemon juiced⁣
  • 1 pinch of salt⁣

Directions:

  1. To make the Apple Vinaigrette, skin and core one ginger gold apple add to blender with apple cider vinegar, lemon juice, and blend until smooth.
  2. Transfer and whisk in 1/4 cup cashew kefir, honey and a pinch of salt.⁣
  3. In your salad mixing bowl add Asian greens, and 1 gala apple cut up into small bite size slices. 
  4. Massage vinaigrette into salad for about 1 minute. Garnish generously with Beetroot Apple Granola. Enjoy!
