NYPD patrol cars are getting a new slogan and design — less than a year after their last update.
Decals imprinted with the old motto — “Courtesy, Professionalism, Respect” — will be replaced with decals bearing the new one: “Fighting crime, protecting the public.” The move will cost taxpayers $1,390 per vehicle, according to a police spokesperson.
The spokesperson did not immediately answer a question about the reason for the update.
So far, the NYPD has spent nearly $200,000 to stamp 125 vehicles with the new decal. The department will also use the updated design on new vehicles as it adds them to the fleet, the spokesperson said.
The department has about 10,000 patrol cars in total, according to records. The new slogan is written in a lowercase, cursive font on the back windows.
The cars have five green and white stripes on their sides, which represent New York City’s five boroughs. White stars over blue and green stripes are a nod to the NYPD flag, with the stars representing the towns and villages that became New York City in 1899.
Former NYPD Commissioner Keechant Sewell unveiled her newly designed patrol cars in 2023, which featured green racing stripes along the length of every vehicle and the slogan “Protecting NYC since 1845.” The new cars began rolling out earlier this year.
For now, the multiple design changes may leave New Yorkers spotting a variety of police cars: the original blue-and-white, Sewell’s green-striped cars and current NYPD Commissioner Edward Caban’s combination of the two.
