Police said on Monday that they were still investigating the killing of a 14-year-old boy who was fatally shot at a Brooklyn public housing complex the day before.

NYPD officers were called to 80 Osborn St. at NYCHA’s Howard Houses in Brownsville around 10:30 a.m. on Sunday and found the boy unconscious and unresponsive with a gunshot wound to his chest, according to a police spokesperson.

First responders took the boy to Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. No suspects were immediately identified and police did not release the teenager’s name as they worked to notify his family.

According to the New York Daily News, police were looking into the possibility that a younger cousin accidentally shot him while playing with a gun.

The 14-year-old is the 10th person to have died of gun violence in the 73rd Precinct so far this year, according to NYPD data. That’s a marked increase from 2023, when six people were shot and killed in the precinct over the entire year.

On May 18, 30-year-old Lamont Russell was shot and killed at 101 Osborn St., just away from the Howard Houses. A 28-year-old man who was also caught up in the incident was shot in his hand. At the time, one of Russell’s cousins said a man wearing a mask gunned Russell down.

A few days earlier, about a mile away, 24-year-old Maurice Boodie was fatally shot in his building on Strauss Street in Brownsville.

According to police statistics, 20 shootings with a total of 23 victims have been reported year to date in the 73 Precinct, which encompasses Brownsville and Ocean Hill. By comparison, 12 incidents with 13 victims were reported in the precinct during the same period last year.
