Storms on NYC’s horizon, with another brutal heat wave next week

New York City is expecting heavy rainfall on Friday afternoon before heading smack into another punishing heatwave later this weekend, weather experts say.

David Stark, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service, said rain and thunder are expected to last into Saturday morning, after which conditions could be dry until the middle of next week.

“Heavy rain cannot be ruled out, so be on the lookout for some flooding,” he said in an interview.

The weather pattern is due to a “weak frontal boundary,” Stark said, which is retreating back to the northern region.

“[It’s] very common in the summertime, where you get these fluctuations with different air masses,” he added.

The next heatwave is expected to descend Sunday with temperatures likely to be over 90 degrees Fahrenheit. On Monday and Tuesday humidity could make temps feel like the upper 90’s and even 100 degrees. Rainfall is forecast to return next Wednesday, where the temperature may start to gradually come back down. .

Despite a brutally hot summer in the city so far, Stark said New Yorkers shouldn’t lose heart for the rest of the season.

“It doesn’t necessarily mean we’re going to continue to see these heat waves for the rest of the summer,” said Stark. “As you get later in the summer, the pattern may change a little bit.”
