Spruill Center’s annual event to reveal AMPLIFY mural

The Spruill Center for the Arts, at its annual Spirits for Spruill celebration on Oct. 26, will reveal this year’s AMPLIFY winner whose mural will be displayed on the gallery’s Smoke House on Ashford Dunwoody Road.

The  theme “Taqueria & Tequila” will be reflected in the food and drink. Guests will be served fare from Chupito’s Azteca Grill and tequila-based drinks from Savannah Distributing, while listening to live blues rock from the BFG Band.

The event features the unveiling of the AMPLIFY mural on the Spruill Gallery Smoke House, which faces Ashford Dunwoody Road. The winning artists will receive $5,000.

Spirits for Spruill and AMPLIFY embody the essence of our commitment to fostering creativity and community,” Spruill Center CEO Alan Mothner said. “It’s an enjoyable occasion where art enthusiasts, local residents and friends can come together to revel in the magic of art and the joy of shared experiences.”

The winning artwork will be chosen from three finalists’ submissions – Steven L. Anderson, InKyoung Chun, and Manty Dey – who were chosen by Spruill’s art committee from the pool of entries.

Anderson, an exhibiting artist and co-director of Day Projects—an artist-run gallery in Atlanta, continues his “ReNaturing” artworks from Spruill’s “In Light” exhibition of Summer 2023.

Images clipped from 19th-century botanical engravings of vines and flowers cascade across the wall in black, punctuated by colorful washes, gradients, drips, and marks of varying transparencies that seem to escape from the scientifically rendered flora.

Chun, who is represented by Yi Gallery in Brooklyn, N.Y., created a scene entitled “The Table, which is filled with fresh foods, drinks, and decorations. The table is a significant, central object in the house that symbolizes serving, sharing, celebrating, and togetherness, according to the artist.

Dey, a visual artist whose work has been exhibited at MOCA GA, Georgia Museum of Art, Macon Museum of Arts and Sciences, and MINT Gallery, creates botanical paintings inspired by her daily surroundings and observations of nature.

Paper collages, botanical illustrations, and color field paintings inspire her recent works. Her mural design is a colorful floral abstraction inspired by cyclamen petals.

“We can’t wait to celebrate this year’s mural on a perfect fall afternoon,” Mothner said. “Now in its fifth year, the AMPLIFY unveiling has become a go-to event in the Perimeter area.”

Tickets, which are $45 per person, include food, drink and entertainment. It will be held Oct.26 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the Spruill Gallery garden at 4681 Ashford Dunwoody Road in Dunwoody.
