The Chicago White Sox appeared to be disputing a previous ruling, and Duran wasted no time taking advantage.
The Chicago White Sox gave Red Sox speedster Jarren Duran a golden opportunity to provide a free run for the Red Sox in the third inning on Friday night.
First, an error allowed Bobby Dalbec to score from first and send Duran to third base on what should have been an easy out. After that, Chicago made another critical mistake to give Boston an early lead.
It appeared as though the White Sox were disputing a ruling that Duran touched first base on his way to third. So, after a huddle at home plate, rather than delivering a pitch, Garrett Crochet delivered a pick-off to first base, seemingly with the hope of getting Duran out. The umpires ruled Duran had touched first, and during the commotion, the Red Sox outfielder dashed straight home.
It will officially go down as a steal, marking the second time this season Duran’s stolen a run.
Chicago has been one of the worst teams in the MLB this season, and is riding a 14-game losing streak. Plays like that won’t get them out of the hole anytime soon.
Duran is having quite the year offensively. He bats a respectable .271 on the season, but his speed makes him a larger threat. Thanks to that, he leads the MLB in triples. He also had nine stolen bases heading into Friday’s contest, and has 44 overall in his short career.
His combination of hitting consistency and speed allows Duran to slot comfortably into the top of Boston’s lineup, where he’s stayed all season.
The Red Sox aim to win their third in a row on Friday against Chicago’s top starting pitcher.
