Nearly 750,000 homes and businesses remain without power on Saturday following Hurricane Helene’s devastation in many areas of Georgia.
At 1 p.m., poweroutage,us reports that just over 10,000 outages remain in Fulton and DeKalb counties.
Georgia Power said in a noon press release that it has restored power to 440,000+ customers in the wake of Helene.
“Unfortunately, treacherous conditions remain across the state with crews navigating extensive tree damage, persisting flooding conditions and many road closures,” the press release said. “As of Saturday mid-morning, approximately 540,000 customers remained impacted by Hurricane Helene. The company is also managing the potential for additional power outages that could occur due to the saturated ground and weakened trees.”
Georgia Power said it has 14,000+ personnel engaged in response, including support from Alabama Power, Mississippi Power and dozens of other companies.
Based on ongoing damage assessment, Georgia Power estimates that there are thousands of broken power poles that must be replaced, as well as many miles of down power lines, across the state.
In a social media post, the City of Atlanta Watershed Management said that it has activated its mobile command center and emergency teams in areas around Peachtree Creek with extensive flooding.
The post said that the inspection of stormwater structures is being impeded by high water levels.
“Our teams continue are monitoring the area and checking in on homeowners and residents in the nearby senior high rise regularly,” the statement said.
