Parker seeks arena support; Post office renaming; Weekly gun violence brief


Inside Mt. Airy Church of God in Christ, Parker appealed to shared experiences among the older, middle class, Black residents of NW Philly who filled the church, threading together the potential economic benefits of the arena with childhood memories of a more bustling Market Street and the history of Mount Airy’s own economic ups and downs.

Among the more than 12,000 finishers of the 2024 Philadelphia Marathon was Gloria Vasquez, a 73-year-old grandmother from Kissimmee, Fla. It was her 94th marathon, and moved her closer to her goal to run 100 before she turns 100.
                    
Vasquez, a mother of four and grandmother of eight, got support along the route from members of her family, some even ran with her for a while. And she’ll be back next year. Her granddaughter who lives here said she’d pick up her registration fee for the ’25 marathon. Continue reading…
