Outpatient Detox: Greatly expanding access to addiction recovery

In my experience there are two topics that can make people uncomfortable quickly, grief and addiction.  At the age of five I witnessed this firsthand after my father’s death and learned early on that if I talked about his death, it made adults visibly uneasy. So, I didn’t.

Feeling out of place and uncomfortable was my baseline, and at an early age I struggled with anxiety and fear until my first year at college where I found a solution.  just a few beers and I found relief.

“This is it! Everything is going to be okay,” I thought.

For the next 17 years, my unconscious desire for excess or substances would make me feel normal. From cocaine to IV opioid use, I always circled back to booze, as it was much more sustainable. I avoided relationships so I would not have to hide.  I worked hard so I would not have to be accountable.  I made rules for myself like no drinking until 5 p.m.

In 2017, pancreatitis brought me my first taste of perceived sobriety.  I white knuckled alcohol withdrawal and stopped drinking for a few months, turning to benzos instead. As everything in my life was in constant conflict, I soon returned to drinking, having foolishly thought that I no longer had a problem.

Delusions gave me the courage to quit a 12-year career via text message and my life’s unmanageability gave me justification for day drinking, which continued for the better part of 2018.

Uninsured and having burned through my 401(k), alienating family and friends, and drinking myself into alcoholic neuropathy, I ended up in an inpatient rehab in North Georgia. I collectively spent 96 days in inpatient treatment followed by a year in sober living.

My continued sobriety is contingent on my spiritual connection, my program, my network and my desire to find opportunities to be a useful human. I have found a place where my personal trauma gave light to purpose, working with grieving children at Kate’s Club. I have found an industry in which my personal experience can help others find a better solution.

I was lucky; my family allowed me access to treatment. I was the one in 10 Americans who had the opportunity to go to inpatient rehab.

Thankfully, there are options now that provide greater access to treatment. Georgia Sky Outpatient Detox (GSOD) just opened its fourth outpatient addiction treatment location in Atlanta. This innovative model in addiction rehabilitation is a more accessible option that is covered by insurance and costs less than the current industry model of residential treatment.

Georgia Sky co-founder Jonathan Denker established the outpatient model for those needing or wanting to maintain their normal routine during treatment, and having a facility within 10 miles of your home makes it even easier to seek help.

“In my experience working in the field of addiction recovery, I’ve encountered numerous obstacles to treatment” says Denker, “So we have created an environment which has offered countless people access to a convenient, safe and effective detox from alcohol, opioids, amphetamines and various additional drugs without having a major impact on their day-to-day lives.”

As the demand for flexible and accessible addiction treatment options continues to grow, Georgia Sky will open more outpatient programs to provide a structured and supportive environment for those seeking recovery. The program is designed to meet the unique needs of each patient, tailored to every stage of sobriety.

Key Features of the Georgia Sky Outpatient Detox Program:

  • Personalized Treatment Plans: A team of medical professionals collaborate to address every facet of addiction, including physical, mental and emotional components.
  • Comprehensive Therapies: The program offers a wide range of therapeutic modalities, including psychiatric counseling, individual and group therapy, and family counseling. These therapies are designed to address the underlying causes of addiction and equip patients with the skills needed to maintain sobriety.
  • Flexible Scheduling: Understanding the challenges of balancing work, family, and treatment, our outpatient program provides flexible scheduling options, including evening and weekend sessions. This allows patients to receive the care they need without disrupting their daily lives.
  • Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT): For those who qualify, our program offers medication-assisted treatment as a complement to counseling and therapy. MAT has been proven to reduce cravings and withdrawal symptoms, making it easier for patients to focus on their recovery.  Georgia Sky treats addictions to opiates, benzodiazepines, alcohol, fentanyl, heroin and stimulants.
  • Ongoing Support: Recovery is a lifelong journey, and our program emphasizes the importance of ongoing support. Patients have access to aftercare services, including relapse prevention planning, alumni groups, and continued counseling, to help them sustain their recovery long after the program ends.

Georgia Sky Outpatient Detox has redefined the detox experience by offering a discreet and efficient outpatient detox model. Serving the greater Atlanta area, with facilities in Johns Creek, Marietta, Acworth and Lawrenceville, Georgia Sky ensures you maintain daily routines while benefiting from top-tier, drug and alcohol detox at home with 24/7 support. Georgia Sky is joint commission accredited, which means Georgia Sky underwent a rigorous review by the Joint Commission and was deemed compliant with the highest national standards for safety and quality of care and is committed to continually improving patient care.
