A lone goat spotted wandering down one of Dunwoody’s busiest streets on Friday took social media by storm until the city’s police officers managed to capture it without incident.
Where it came from and who owns it remains a mystery today.
In the early afternoon of Oct. 18, people on social media channels started reporting sightings of the animal as it weaved in and out of traffic in the Jett Ferry Road/Mount Vernon Road area.
Lighthearted posts speculated that the animal was headed to Chick-Fil-A to change the culture or had broken from the herd looking for private-sector freelance opportunities. Several people offered to foster or adopt, while others made references to firing up their grills.
As the hours went on, more goat sightings were reported, leading to speculation about its true owners.
While the city often employs goats to clear out brush and weeds in public areas, this particular Capra aegagrus circus was not part of the employment pool, according to Dunwoody officials.
Police Spokesman Sgt. Michael Cheek said after receiving multiple calls about the wandering billy, several officers located the goat and “wrangled it in” sometime after 9 p.m. Serendipitously, the capture took place near the All Creatures Animal Hospital across the street from the Chick-fil-A. The surrender, Cheek said, was without incident.
Police and city personnel made multiple calls to find the goat’s owner, but nobody claimed it.
“We have no idea who owns the goat, so last night we called DeKalb County Animal Control, which took custody of the animal,” Cheek said.
