Red Line trains will be impacted by closures for renovations between May 9 and May 12.

The Red Line is next to go through closures as part of the MBTA’s Track Improvement Plan, and the transit agency is telling riders to plan for extra travel time for several weeks in May.

Starting May 2 and lasting through May 10, shuttles will replace service on the Red Line between Park Street and JFK/UMass, the MBTA announced on Monday.

Additional closures on the line will take place until May 19, and shuttles will replace Commuter Rail service between South Station and Braintree on the weekends of May 11-12 and May 18-19. 

The closure will allow the MBTA to address eight speed restrictions and complete additional work including lighting repairs, painting, and deep cleaning. Repairs on the Dorchester Avenue Bridge will also be completed, the MBTA said. 

The full list of Red Line closures:

May 9 to May 10

• From May 2 to May 10, shuttles will replace service between Park Street and JFK/UMass. 
• From May 2 to May 9, shuttles will extend to Ashmont after 8:30 p.m.
  • The MBTA is urging riders to use this route to travel downtown to use the Commuter Rail, which will be free between Braintree, Quincy Center, JFK/UMass, and South Station.

Red Line trains will be less frequent during the closures. On weekdays, trains will run from Alewife to Park Street every 11-12 minutes and to Braintree and Ashmont every 13-15 minutes. Longer wait times are expected on weekends. 

May 11 to May 12

• Shuttles will replace trains between Broadway and North Quincy
• Shuttles will replace Commuter Rail service between South Station and Braintree

May 18 to May 19

• Shuttles will replace trains between Broadway and Braintree
• Shuttles will replace Commuter Rail service between South Station and Braintree
