Long Island Drive to close May 17 for weekend overpass work

GDOT’s advised detours around the weekend closure involve using Burdette Road and Lake Forrest Drive. (Submitted by GDOT)

Long Island Drive under I-285 in Sandy Springs will close for the weekend beginning Friday, May 17, so contractors can install overpass bridge foundations.

The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) said in a press release that contractors will perform the work weather permitting. The work will begin on May 17 at 7 p.m. and continue through 7 p.m. on Sunday, May 19.

A detour will be marked with signs that require motorists to use Mt. Vernon Highway, Lake Forrest Drive, and Burdette Road. After the weekend work, motorists should expect temporary flagging operations until all bridge operations are complete.

An alternate weekend for the work will be May 31-June 2.

Detour routes

Motorists traveling northeast on Mount Vernon Highway to Long Island Drive should merge onto Hammond Dr. and take a right onto Lake Forrest Drive.

Motorists traveling north on Long Island Drive to Mount Vernon Highway should take Burdette Road to Lake Forrest Drive.

Motorists traveling to Springmont School should access the school from the south to the north. There will be no north-to-south access during this detour.

Motorists should utilize the side streets of Mount Vernon Highway and Lake Forrest Drive to access areas around Long Island Drive.

The Mt. Vernon Highway bridge replacement is part of a larger project, the I-285 Westbound Auxiliary Lane Extension (P.I. 0017130), that adds a lane on I-285 westbound from Roswell Road to Riverside Drive in Fulton County.

Traffic impacts will be updated regularly via GA 511, the project website, and Georgia DOT social media. For more project information, visit the project website at https://i285wbauxlanes-gdot.hub.arcgis.com/.
