Football

They were not in unanimous agreement, but the MIAA Football Committee voted 11-3 in favor of going forward with proposed changes to the state football format. The next step in the process is to firm things up before presenting it to the Tournament Management Committee (TMC) in time for their September meeting.

According to committee member Steve Dembowski, who has spearheaded the format changes, football coaches throughout the state feel the time has come to make what he feels are necessary changes to improve the sport.

“More than 80 percent of the coaches responded and there is a clear indication across the state that they are in favor of the new plan as currently presented,” said Dembowski, the head football coach at Milton. “We are trying to solve problems with this format and this would do away with consolation games and give every team a chance to have an opportunity to play a complete season into Thanksgiving.”

Among the pertinent questions asked were whether teams should have a 10-game regular season with no consolation games (70 percent approval), should the football tournament begin after the regular season (Thanksgiving) to be consistent with other MIAA sports (65 percent yes), would coaches be OK with a reduction in teams qualifying for the tournament from the current 16 to eight if a 10-game regular season schedule (67 percent yes) and should Thanksgiving Day football be eliminated in order to have a 10-game regular season with playoffs (74 percent said no).

Correction

In a Herald article regarding the Boston City League baseball finals, which appeared on May 26, there was mention of English baseball player David Castillo being a fifth-year senior. In fact, Castillo is a fourth-year senior. The Herald regrets the error.
