Poverty is a direct cause of lack of access to menstrual cycle products. In Georgia, one in five women and girls between the ages of 12-44 live below the poverty level, and in the United States, one in four students misses class due to lack of access to period products.
To address the issue, eight Brookhaven residents from the inaugural class of Leadership Perimeter are launching a community project, Prosecco Period Party.
Leadership Perimeter is a select group of professionals who address their community’s needs through volunteerism. It serves Sandy Springs, Dunwoody, and Brookhaven.
“We felt like this would make a difference in the Brookhaven community,” said Jennifer Dunaway, a Leadership Perimeter board member and Brookhaven resident.
Packs will be distributed to middle and high schools in DeKalb County School District, and stored in the community supply closet at the Latin American Association on Buford Highway.
One-third of low income women report missing work due to lack of access to period products. The goal is to ensure women can work by supplying products that every woman needs, Dunaway said.
Volunteers of all ages are welcome to pack kits from 2-5 p.m. on Sunday, April 21, at Arnette’s Chop Shop in Brookhaven while enjoying a glass of Prosecco, light bites, music, and giveaways.
In advance of the event, contributions can be dropped off at Brookhaven City Hall, 1492 Peachtree Road, at the State Farm insurance office, 1442 Dresden Drive, or purchased from an Amazon wish list. Guests can also bring donations to the event.
