Helene’s approach: Schools and events postponed in Atlanta

Hurricane Helene is expected to make landfall on Florida’s Gulf Coast on Sept. 26 and will make a beeline through Georgia and metro Atlanta. Due to the inclement weather, schools are closing and events are being postponed. This list will be constantly updating as the storm advances.

Events

Atlanta

The Sept. 26 Party for Piedmont Park has been canceled due to the threat of bad weather on Thursday evening. Piedmont Park officials will explore future options for celebrating the 120th birthday of Atlanta’s largest green space. If requested, attendees can receive a full refund by contacting amarchetta@piedmontpark.org. The virtual silent auction will continue through Monday, Sept. 30.

The annual AIDS Walk Atlanta Music Festival and 5k Run scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 28 at Piedmont Park has been postponed. Visit aidswalkatlanta.org for updates.

The Marcel burger pop-up scheduled for Friday, Sept. 27, at Bar Blanc at Westside Provisions District will now take place on Saturday, Sept. 28, from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. First come, first served.

The Georgia Latino International Film Festival, which was scheduled to run Sept. 26-29, has been postponed. New dates for the festival are expected to be announced soon.

The Plaza and Tara theatres will be closed Thursday, but expect to reopen Friday after 6 p.m., weather permitting.

The Atlanta Braves remaining games vs the New York Mets scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday have been postponed. Both games have been rescheduled as part of a traditional doubleheader on Monday, Sept. 30.

Brookhaven

Brookhaven City Councilmembers John Funny (District 4) and Michael Diaz (District 1) have announced the rescheduling of their individual district meetings originally planned for Thursday, Sept. 26.

Brookhaven’s Wednesday Food Truck Night, featuring live music, free piñata workshops, and face painting, has been rescheduled to Wednesday, Oct. 2 from 5:00 to 8:30 p.m.

Chamblee

MARTA has postponed its customer appreciation and community event for Hispanic Heritage Month on Sept. 26 at the Chamblee station. Plans to reschedule the event are in the works.

DeKalb County

All DeKalb County Library branches will be closed Thursday and Friday.

Fulton County

Fulton County public facilities will be closed on Thursday, including libraries, senior centers, tax offices, and government centers. Employees will continue to telework to support virtual services.

The Fulton County Courthouse will open for emergency matters. Jurors will not report on Thursday. In-person hearings will be rescheduled. Virtual proceedings will continue. Fulton County Probate Court will not hold weddings on Friday.

The Fulton County Board of Health will close its facilities at 2 p.m. on Thursday and will be open for virtual services only on Friday. Vital records will be available online only.

Sandy Springs

Weather conditions caused a Save Spalding Community meeting to move to a new location on Thursday. Anyone interested is invited to attend at 7 p.m. at La Dee Da Children’s Art Studio, 105 Cliftwood Dr NE, Sandy Springs, GA 30328.

The Sandy Springs Recreation and Parks Department rescheduled its Geology Walk and Talk from Thursday to Wednesday, Oct. 9 at 6:30 p.m. Register here.

School/college closures

Atlanta Public Schools canceled classes for Thursday and Friday. District employees will work remotely from home. Expect an update on Friday regarding weekend activities.

Fulton County Schools canceled Thursday’s after-school activities and meetings. No school or after-school activities and meetings on Friday. Offices will also be closed on Friday. The district will announce by 4 p.m. on Friday if weekend activities will be held after campus conditions are evaluated.

DeKalb County School District announced schools would be closed Thursday and Friday, including school-based, district-wide, extracurricular, and athletic events.

Clayton County schools canceled Friday classes, with after-school and extracurricular activities canceled Thursday through Saturday.

Mount Vernon School’s Athletics Department announced Wednesday’s varsity softball game at Etowah High School was canceled due to the weather. It will not be rescheduled.

Georgia College & State University canceled classes for Thursday and Friday.

Emory University, including Oxford College, will implement virtual learning and remote work on Thursday and Friday.

Spelman College will close early on Thursday and implement remote learning and work on Friday.

Georgia Tech will be closed for in-person classes on Thursday and Friday and will switch to virtual classes.

Morehouse College will close early on Thursday and implement remote learning and work on Friday.

Georgia State University’s campuses will move to virtual classes on Thursday and Friday.
