Dumpster-diving vultures in Connecticut became intoxicated

Local News

“Drunk vultures are not easy patients, just sayin’.”

A pair of vultures in Connecticut were rescued earlier this month after they became severely intoxicated from gobbling up fermented food and fruit from cocktails while dumpster diving.

On April 7, animal control in Watertown, Conn., responded to reports of two vultures that had been spotted with “no balance, unable to stand or fly and uncontrollable shaking.” The birds were transported to the wildlife rehabilitator A Place Called Hope for treatment.

The birds kept passing out, worrying rescuers that they were dying.

“A Place Called Hope worked their magic by testing, doing radiographs and giving IV fluids/pain medication,” the animal control department wrote on Facebook. “Nothing showed up on these tests! We were all confused and scratching our heads. We thought these birds were actively dying.”

Ultimately, the animal rescuers determined the vultures were drunk after ruling everything else out and learning the details of the case.

Watertown Animal Control told The Boston Globe that the birds were found on a street populated by bars, restaurants, and a meat center. The dumpster they got into did not have a lid and contained old meats and fruit from cocktail drinks.

“They were too drunk to fly,” A Place Called Hope wrote on Facebook. “They only needed fluids and to be tucked in overnight… and fed a BIG breakfast the next day.”

After a few days and “some fluids and time to recover from a wicked hangover,” according to animal control, the birds were released back into Watertown.

“Remember, your cocktail fruit that ends up in a dumpster can end up intoxicating wildlife if the dumpster is not kept closed,” A Place Called Hope wrote on Facebook. “Birds don’t let other birds fly drunk… this dynamic duo had each other’s backs, but I don’t know if any lessons were learned on their end… Quite the story! and drunk vultures are not easy patients, just sayin’.”
