More than a dozen emergency units responded to a noontime house fire in Dunwoody that engulfed the structure and left one woman injured.

According to DeKalb Assistant Fire Chief Ty Welch, someone near the home on Vermack Court flagged down a passing fire truck unit and alerted personnel to the blaze around 11:45 a.m. on Oct. 16.

“When the unit arrived, the fire was active at the rear of the home and inside as well,” Welch said. “The fire also reached the second floor and the attic.”

Welch said additional units were called to the scene and the blaze was extinguished “fairly quickly.” Fifteen units responded to the location.

Mark Goodelman, who has owned the home since 2004, said he was at work when a neighbor called him about the fire.

“My neighbor said that about five units were already there,” Goodelman said. “I have no idea how it started or what the damage is. The investigator is in there and won’t let me in. I’m really just in shock right now.”

Goodleman said one person in the house suffered burns to her neck and arm and was transported to Grady Hospital for treatment.

Observers said the smoke rising from the home could be seen from miles away.

Dunwoody resident Kate Seals said she and her mother were driving eastbound on I-285 and saw a huge plume of smoke that was visible from the Ashford Dunwoody exit.

“My mom said, ‘I hope it’s not your place,’” Seals said.

Welch said the fire is currently under investigation and its cause has not been determined.
