Brookhaven’s 100% affordable housing project moves forward

The city of Brookhaven is addressing the affordable housing crisis with the financing of a new property on Buford Highway being targeted for what the city is calling “100% affordable workforce housing.”

Brookhaven Mayor John Park and city council members voted on Aug. 27 to approve an InterGovermental Agreement (IGA) with the Brookhaven Development Authority, which is financing the $7.4 million property at 2677 and 2687 Buford Highway NE

Following the September closing, Brookhaven will partner with the Housing Authority of DeKalb County to construct affordable housing units.  Councilmember John Funny said construction is anticipated to begin in late 2026 after existing tenants exit the property.

The Buford Highway property is being purchased from KBO, LLC. The parcels are currently occupied by a small office building and a parking lot.

“This is very historic because we have the opportunity to assist those that are making lower to median income,” Funny said. “It allows us to continue being a welcoming city. It allows us to continue sharing the word to other cities that we’re serious.”

“Affordable housing, workforce housing is a national problem. People talk about it, and say they want to do things. Well, we’re doing something,” said Funny.
