Brookhaven proposes real-time crime center in 2025 budget

Brookhaven Police officers can expect two new perks in 2025, according to the city’s jusst-released details on the fiscal year 2025 budget.

The budget allows for a real-time crime center within the Brookhaven Police Department which integrates crime-fighting technology including Flock Safety’s license plate readers, cameras, gunshot detection technology, and drones in a single location.

According to city documents, the crime center will provide officers with real-time intelligence, improve response times, and increase efficiency.

Crime center equipment will be funded by the special service district, and personnel costs will come from the general fund.

The monthly housing allowance for Brookhaven police officers living within the city is scheduled to increase from $1,000 to $1,200. A $1,000 monthly housing allowance for non-police officer staff living in the city is also being proposed.

The 2025 proposed general fund budget is $38.1 million, representing an increase of $2.7 million or 7.6% from the 2024 adopted budget.

The proposed 2.74 millage rate for operations remains unchanged, but the city said “an increase may be required in future years due to the residential homestead assessment freeze.”

Residents may see a decrease in their annual stormwater fees and streetlight assessments due to changes being proposed in the FY25 budget.

The budget is available online at the city’s website, and provides a recap of how money was spent in 2024.

The city will present the budget for public comment at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 6 and Tuesday, Nov. 19 at Brookhaven City Hall.
