Bronx man dies after being struck by e-bike last month

A Bronx man died last week after being struck by an electric bicycle at an intersection in East Harlem, police announced Saturday.

NYPD officials said 59-year-old Jose Peralta died on Thursday, April 4, after an e-bike collision days earlier sent him to a local hospital with head trauma.

Peralta was walking in the crosswalk at First Avenue and 106th Street in upper Manhattan shortly before midnight on March 29 when a person on an e-bike rammed into him, according to officials.

Peralta was hospitalized, where police said he was pronounced dead nearly a week after the crash.

The cyclist likely had a green light and stayed at the scene after the crash, per officials. Police say they have made no arrests and are investigating.

Just more than a week before the deadly crash, the city launched an e-bike safety campaign to curb the spike in fatalities from the ubiquitous machines. There were 23 fatal e-bike crashes last year, compared to nine in 2022, according to city data.
