Scheierman is the all-time single-season leader for passing yards and touchdown in Nebraska high school football history.
Before the Celtics selected him with the No. 30 overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, Baylor Scheierman set the Nebraska state record for single-season passing yards (3,924) and touchdowns (59) as a high-school quarterback.
His football skill-set helped prepare him for the hardwood. Scheierman was a First-Team All-Big East selection last season, averaging 18.5 points, 9 rebounds, and 3.9 assists per game.
“I think it plays a big part, obviously,” Scheierman said. “The quarterback in football – you have to know everything that is going on on the field. You have to know what routes your receivers are running. You have to know what the defense is in. You have to know what routes beat certain defenses. You have to know it all and it happens so fast.”
“Basketball is kind of the same thing,” he added. “In terms of my playmaking, my ability to see the court and kind of anticipate things before it happens and then my ability to deliver the ball on time and on target. I think playing football definitely helped me continue to develop that on the basketball court for sure.”
Scheierman played the first three years of his college basketball career at South Dakota State before transferring to Creighton. He transferred because he wanted to challenge himself and show that he could play in a major conference.
“South Dakota State is a great program and I still value and have a lot of relationships with the people there,” Scheierman said. “My three years there were nothing short of amazing. After my junior year, going through the NBA Draft process and getting feedback, I felt that I needed to move up and challenge myself again.”
Scheierman said he worked out for the Celtics in 2022. This time around, with an improved game and experience at a higher level of college basketball, Scheierman was their pick.
He said he’s excited to get to work and help the Celtics win in any way that he can.
“I was very anxious coming towards the end of the first round,” Scheierman said. “Got the phone call there while the Celtics were on the clock. As soon as I got the phone call I was super excited.
“Being picked by this organization that is coming off of an NBA championship, an organization that doesn’t just pick anybody to come into their team was an honor, that they felt confident enough to pick me and felt that I could come in and impact the team in any way that I can and try to help them continue the culture that they already have set.”
