Arrest of Janet Williams in murder of 90-year-old man

Atlanta Police have arrested a 65-year-old woman and charged her with the gruesome death of a 90-year-old man at a Buckhead apartment complex.

Janet Williams was arrested Oct. 10 and charged with the murder of Chun Ki Kim, who was found dead Sept. 25 in his apartment at Marian Road Highrise on Sydney Marcus Boulevard. He had been stabbed more than 50 times in his face and torso, according to a warrant issued for Williams’ arrest.

Williams was a security guard at the apartment building where Kim lived. The building is owned by the Atlanta Housing Authority and serves seniors and people with disabilities, the warrant said.

Several surveillance cameras are located in the building’s common areas, but there are no cameras on the floors with apartments that would show someone entering or exiting a unit.

The warrant said investigators watched several hours of surveillance footage from Sept. 24, when Kim was last seen on camera at about noon getting on the elevator to go to his apartment on the 5th floor.

From the warrant: “At approximately 3:15 p.m., one of the building security guards, Janet Williams, got on the south elevator and took it to the 5th floor. She was seen wearing her dark colored security guard uniform consisting of a short sleeve collared shirt bearing several patches identifying her as a security guard, matching cargo style pants, dark colored Crocs or clog style shoes, eyeglasses, a Covid mask, a lanyard seemingly holding an ID and a key or keys, and she was carrying a red reusable grocery bag with the Xfinity logo on it.”

Williams reentered the same south elevator from the 5th floor about six minutes later. The warrant said Williams “looked stressed” and was no longer wearing her glasses or a Covid mask.

Williams wiped her right pant leg “which was now torn and appeared wet with a dark reddish stain, and she examined the back of her left hand,” according to the warrant. Her red Xfinity bag also appeared to be fuller.

Williams got off the elevator with a noticeable limp, entered the lobby restroom and returned to the security desk. She made two more trips to the 5th floor within a short time, but was no longer carrying the red Xfinity bag, according to the warrant.

Members of the Atlanta Police Homicide Unit said Williams “stood by and watched closely, even asking questions of the police” as they investigated the crime scene on Sept. 25.

On Sept. 26, an Atlanta Police detective went to speak to a resident on the 5th floor who had a doorbell camera, the warrant said. Williams followed the officer up to the 5th floor and into the resident’s apartment as the video footage was being discussed.

The Atlanta Police Department Homicide Unit executed a search warrant on Oct. 3 at Williams’ home in DeKalb County, according to the warrant. Investigators collected her guard uniforms, Croc style shoes, and red Xinity bag. One of the pairs of pants had a tear on the right part of the thigh area which had been sewn back together.

The Homicide Unit also had a search warrant for a visual examination of Williams and found she had a large wound on her right thigh wrapped in a bandage. Williams told police she hurt her thigh opening her garage door.

Atlanta Police said based on their investigation, Williams entered Kim’s apartment on Sept. 24.

“While it was still unclear what her intentions initially were, Ms. Wiliams stabbed Mr. Kim to death,” according to the warrant.

Williams is currently being held at the Fulton County Jail.
