Dunwoody residents are mobilizing quickly to assist with recovery efforts in Augusta and other areas affected by Tropical Storm Helene
With only 18 hour’s lead time, more than 4,000 bottles of water, hundreds of gallons of water and dozens of tarps were delivered to Kingswood United Methodist Church on Sept. 30. Those supplies are now en route to Augusta, one of Georgia’s hardest-hit areas in Helene’s path.
Media reports say Augusta had left more than a million households without power. Efforts are focusing now on the repair and/or replacement of over 7,000 power poles.
“Kingswood Church had to recruit additional drivers to get it [the supplies] there,” Dunwoody Mayor Lynn Deutsch said.
More opportunities exist in the next 24 hours: Chamblee First United Methodist Church is serving as a pickup location for the nonprofit called Caring for Others, which is activating its Convoy for Care.
On Oct. 2, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. specific donations can be dropped at the church, 4147 Chamblee Dunwoody Rd. Needed items include cleaning supplies, tools, trash bags, paper towels, and personal hygiene kits. Organizers will be taking the supplies for drop-off in the Valdosta and Augusta areas.
They ask those wishing to donate not to deviate from the stated needs. A call for volunteers has been met as of Tuesday.
