🎵 André 3000 will bring his acclaimed flute album “New Blue Sun” to the Atlanta Jazz Festival at Piedmont Park tonight at 7 p.m. The concert is free, but get to Piedmont Park early if you want to be close to the stage.

The co-founder of OutKast has been touring at smaller venues where he and his band play ambient, freeform concerts that mix in tunes from his debut solo album. No two shows have been alike, so expect the unexpected.

Be sure to stick around after AndrÊ, because jazz luminary Lizz Wright will be closing the weekend festival starting at 9 p.m.

2. Boozy strolls allowed in Dresden District

🍹 The first open container district in Brookhaven officially opened on Friday in an effort to boost economic development and pedestrian traffic on Dresden Drive, an area Mayor John Park calls the “heart of the city.”

Within the Dresden District, pedestrians may walk around with alcoholic beverages from a participating establishment between the hours of 9 a.m. and 10 p.m. The drink, no more than 16 oz., must be contained and consumed in an official Dresden District cup.

“The goal of the district is to add to the appeal of the Dresden corridor as a neighborhood destination,” said District 2 Councilwoman Jennifer Owens. “Encouraging our residents to enjoy all the amenities this vibrant area has to offer strengthens our community as a whole.”

3. As British pubs struggle, the pint turns 200

🇵🇬 Hundreds of people are feared dead after a landslide in a remote part of Papua New Guinea.

🇲🇽 Mexico is being hit by record heat, whirlwinds, and hail.

🇬🇧 The pint of beer turns 200 this year. Although Britons had been entitled to a standardized beer serving since the Magna Carta of 1215, it wasn’t until 1824 that a British law standardized the Imperial unit. Since the pandemic changed consumers’ alcohol habits, British pubs have been closing at a rate of roughly 4 per day.

🇬🇧 The Royal Mint has unveiled a coin commemorating the 80th anniversary of D-Day, the largest amphibious assault in history, that took place in France on June 6, 1944. Heads of state from around the world are expected to attend military ceremonies next week.

🇫🇷 Meanwhile, the French postal service has released a scratch-and-sniff stamp that smells like freshly baked bread.

4. Eight highly anticipated summer restaurants opening around Atlanta

🔥 Rough Draft continues to track the progress of some of this year’s hotly anticipated restaurants and bars.

We’ve already seen some big restaurant openings in 2024, including Mexican restaurant Casa Balam in Decatur from the owners of Oaxaca, the return of The Porter Beer Bar in Little Five Points, and Chef Kevin Gillespie’s Nàdair opening in the former Floataway Cafe space.

Since our last anticipated restaurants update dropped in February, Damsel, Painted Pickle, and Floridaman have opened, and the openings of Gene’s in East Lake and Pure Quill Superette in Edgewood appear imminent.

5. ‘Furiosa’ and hope in the time of the apocalypse

FROM SCENE, A WEEKLY NEWSLETTER | SUBSCRIBE

🏍️ When it comes to action filmmaking, “Mad Max: Fury Road” upped the game in 2015. If anything can be universally agreed upon by critics and audiences alike, it has to be this. George Miller’s action opus is a thrill ride like no other, a nonstop chase movie of post-apocalyptic proportions that roars with a fury fitting of its name.

So, “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” Miller’s follow-up to “Fury Road,” had a lot resting on its shoulders. And from the jump, it’s clear Miller has no interest in simply repeating what he achieved in 2015.

“Furiosa” operates on a much larger scale than “Fury Road,” not just following one woman’s mission via car chase, but attempting to unpack her history, her trauma, and her life over the span of roughly two and a half hours. As impressive as the scale of the film can be, sometimes the sheer colossal ambition of it all can overpower the film’s emotional core, particularly in the film’s midsection. But through the relationship between Furiosa (Anya Taylor-Joy) and her biggest foe, a warlord named Dementus (Chris Hemsworth), Miller gets to the crux of our relationship to hope – why it disappears, why it perseveres, and what we’re willing to do to keep it.
